#BeYourOwnIcon: Meghan Trainor

Meghan Trainor and AmericanSunglass

At American Sunglass, with our motto of #BeAnIcon, we talk all the time about Icons ….about how each of you can become your OWN Icon.

No one has done it better than Cape Cod’s own Music Icon, Ms Meghan Trainor. With her recent Grammy win of Best New Artist, at just 22 years old she has established herself as an American Music Icon.

From the age of 6 she has been singing in public. At 11 she began writing her own songs. Then at 15 she wrote, recorded, performed and produced three independently-released albums.  Her very distinctive retro style of music, voice and fashion-sense, has endeared her to music-lovers of all ages.

But it hasn’t been an easy journey for Ms Trainor.

Born and raised on Nantucket, she was a normal-sized girl who was as comfortable playing football with her brothers as she was singing a love song.  Despite her talents, at 15 she thought her career was done because she did not have the typical pop star look.

That was only compounded by the rise of bodysnarking, occurring at the same time she was a student at Nauset High School. She not only doubted herself, she wondered why she couldn’t break into the business, believing her body was holding her back from achieving her dreams.

In the end, she didn’t let any of that stop her from working hard and realizing her goals.  In fact she used a particularly hurtful incident to create the song “All About the Bass”.

This song became a powerful touchstone for the millions of girls who will never, ever have super-model bodies.  She basically said “Look at ME…Look at who I am…NOT what I look like”. She has done so much to help young women be happy with themselves, to look beyond their bodies and empowering them to pursue their dreams despite what others think.

Congratulations on your Grammy, Ms Trainor, it is well deserved. We are so happy for you and proud of the Icon that you have become!

Words of an Icon: "I just think women should love themselves more than they do. Because I think - with all the social media stuff - we look at ourselves too much, and we just destroy ourselves, when we're way cooler than we know." ~ Meghan Trainor
