7 Tips To Keep Your Eyes Healthy

 Protect Your Eyes on AmericanSunglass.com

At American Sunglass, we are passionate about protecting our eyes. Many people take them for granted until something goes wrong, but did you know that 80% of vision problems are avoidable or curable?

Sunglasses with UV protection are one important way to protect one of our most precious organs, but there are lots of other ways to take care of the pair of eyes we rely so heavily on.

Don’t neglect the second most complex organ in your body (after the brain). Read on to find out what you can do in your daily life to keep your eyes healthy!

1. Eat a Healthy and Well-Balanced Diet

This is good advice for general health, but is important for your eyes as well. Try to fill your diet with foods rich in:

  • Zinc - to ward off light damage
  • Vitamin A - to improve vision
  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids, Vitamin E, Lutein - to prevent age-related vision problems
  • Beta-Carotene - to block harmful light and makes vision sharper
  • Zeaxanthin - to protect from ultraviolet rays

Try to incorporate lots of green leafy vegetables, salmon and tuna, eggs, nuts, beans, oranges and citrus fruits, carrots, yellow or orange produce, lean red meat, poultry, and oysters in your diet. You’ll be improving your overall health, as well as protecting against light damage, macular degeneration, and cataracts.

 2. Take Frequent Computer Breaks

Spending lots of time on our computers, tablets or smartphones seems unavoidable these days, but we can still protect our eyes by remembering to take breaks throughout the day.

Your eyes can become strained, tired and dry while looking at a screen because we blink half as often as usual.

Try to place your screen about 2 feet away from you if possible, and look away every 20 minutes for at least 20 seconds. Also consider turning down the brightness or using a screen filter to reduce the light intensity.

3. Wear Sunglasses

This is our favorite tip! We love a great pair of sunglasses, but we’re even more excited about them when the lenses have proper UV light protection.

Double check that any sunglasses you buy offer 100% UVA/UVB protection. And remember to wear them even on cloudy days and in the winter -  harmful rays can penetrate clouds.

Also, consider wearing a hat more often to further block harmful UV rays.

4. Visit Your Eye Doctor Regularly

There’s no substitute for having your eyes checked by a professional. Schedule an eye exam every 1-2 years, even if you don’t notice any problems with your eyes. Eye doctors will be able to do a comprehensive exam and catch any potential issues early.

5. Clean Your Contact Lenses

If you wear contacts, be sure to take careful care of them. Wash your hands before inserting or removing them, clean them with multi purpose solution each night, and rinse out your contact case regularly.

6. Don’t Use Expired Makeup

Make sure to use fresh eye makeup because liquid and cream eye shadows or mascara can harbor bacteria. Change out your eye makeup every 3 months. Be sure to wash your face and eye area before bed, and don’t use shared makeup samples at the store.

 7. Stop Smoking

Quitting smoking is important for a myriad of health reasons, but one of them is eye health. Smoking can cause all kinds of eye problems including cataracts, macular degeneration, vision loss, and dry eyes. Quit smoking now, and you’ll greatly decrease your chances of harming your precious eyes.
